SASHA HUNTER

DIRECTOR OF COACHING

Sasha has been coaching soccer for 21 years. He began coaching at Willis Jr. High School in 2001 and is currently coaching the Chandler High School’s Boys varsity team. Sasha led the CHS boys high school team to its first state title in school history in 2015. He has been teaching special education for 21 years as well.

He taught at Willis for 12 years and 9 years at Chandler High. He has trained several teams and coached his own kids’ recreational and competitive teams through Arcadia, YMCA, AZSC, GYSA, and Santan.

He currently holds a National “E” license certificate and Grassroots 7 v 7 and 11 v 11 certificates for coaching and will be continuing his licensing as time permits.

Brianna has been coaching for 10 years. She started her own academy with her older sister Ashley Hatch in 2010 and is currently coaching the Timpview High School’s girls JV and Varsity team. She played for Highland High School and was part of two state championships in 2012 & 2015. She played collegiate D1 soccer for BYU from 2015-2016 and made it to the NCAA sweet sixteen in 2016. She played her last two years at Utah Valley University. She has been coaching club teams locally and in Utah for over 5 years.

BOB ROESNER

'14 BOYS BLUE & GIRLS BLUE HEAD COACH/'15 BOYS BLUE & GIRLS BLUE HEAD COACH

Bob has been coaching soccer for 13 years. He began coaching in AYSO in 2003 and is currently coaching the Predators Youth Squads in the GYSA system. He has been active in youth training for years in both recreational sports, and extracurricular activities like training youth for rappelling, canoeing, and various other outdoor activities. He has trained several teams and coached his own kids’ recreational and competitive teams through AYSO, NYSA, and GYSA. He currently holds a National “F” license certificate for coaching.

OZZY PEREZ

16' BOYS ACADEMY HEAD COACH 2023-2024 Season

Ozzy started coaching soccer back to 1998. Ozzy brings a strong playing background and coaching experience of over 25 years. Coach Ozzy has instructed more than 20 plus teams, from the grassroots level of 4 year old’s to an elite level of college age players.  Coach Ozzy is also a 2 time State Cup Finalists, and State Cup Champion (2015).

IVAN CHACON

08' BOYS COMPETITIVE HEAD COACH 2023-3024 SEASON

Ivan has been a part of NSFC since 2019. That year he became a part of Edwin Mesones’ 03 team and has been with the club since. He was introduced to soccer ever since his youth, having played recreational soccer with AZSC since the age of 3. He fell in love with the sport and has stayed involved since, playing all 4 years at Queen Creek High School and 4 seasons with 2 different club teams.

NICOLE WHITING

'09 GIRLS RED ASSISTANT COACH

Nicole has been coaching soccer for 10 years now. She started as a recreational coach and is now enjoying her experience at Mountain View High School as the Head JV coach. She is looking forward to coaching at the club level. Nicole began playing soccer competitively 25 years ago and has enjoyed working with today’s youth in finding that same love and devotion for the sport. In addition to coaching, Nicole has a combined six years of being a coach instructor and managing a recreational league of more than 1,000 soccer players. She continues to further her soccer experience and credentials, always striving to become a better coach for her players.

CHAD WELCH

'06 GIRLS BLUE ASSISTANT COACH/'07 GIRLS BLUE ASSISTANT COACH/'09 GIRLS BLUE ASSISTANT COACH

Chad has been an assistant coach with his daughter’s GYSA’s team for 3 seasons.  He played soccer in the East Valley from Kindergarten throughout Junior High School.  He has been in outside sales his entire career and is currently working for Panolam Surface Systems. He also secured his substitute teacher license in 2013.

TODD WALDEN

'12 BOYS BLUE HEAD COACH

Todd has been coaching recreational soccer for 6 years through AZSC. He is currently working on obtaining his licensing since coaching in competitive leagues is new to Todd. He has been playing competitively for more than 20 years and has some collegiate experience.

NICK TIGGS

'04 GIRLS RED HEAD COACH/'09 BOYS RED HEAD COACH

Nicholas has been coaching soccer for 13 years. He began coaching at Tempe Soccer Club and Altadena Jr. High School where he coached 7th and 8th grade boys and girls. Both of his teams went on to win three titles in two years. Nicholas then was an assistant coach for the Desert Vista men’s soccer team and head coach for the Desert Vista Junior Varsity 2005/2006. He has trained several teams and athletes, helping them elevate their skill set both off and on the field. Nicholas recently was an assistant coach for the 2013 Scottsdale Men’s soccer program.  He currently holds a National “E” license certificate for coaching.

GREGG RUPP

'12 BOYS WHITE HEAD COACH

Gregg Rupp has coached youth soccer at the rec level for three years. He has played soccer since he was four and shares a passion for all things soccer. Gregg has worked as a teacher and an aide for ESL students and enjoys contributing to the development of character, camaraderie, and teamwork through youth sports. He will be new to coaching at the club level this year.

LOREN ROHNER

'09 BOYS BLUE ASSISTANT COACH

Loren has coached a variety of individual and team sports most of his adult life. He believes that the team improves as individuals improve. His desire is to have each person he works with improve their individual skills, know the rules of the game, and understand the value of team effort and support. He has coached baseball, softball, basketball, volleyball, racquetball, tennis, and soccer. He referees or umpires all the sports he coached with the exception of racquetball, at high school and adult levels. He has enjoyed coaching his eight children and has participated in community theater. With his wife Rachelle, he has directed plays and pageants on a local level. His children coach sports and direct plays, musicals, and dance in their communities. He began coaching in the Dobson Ranch Recreational Soccer League and continued with San Tan Recreational, Gilbert Youth Soccer.

AUSTIN ROHNER

'06 BOYS RED HEAD COACH/'09 BOYS BLUE HEAD COACH

Austin has been playing soccer for over 24 years. He started at age five and has played for GYSA, Gilbert Arsenal, Mesa Soccer Club, Junior High, High School, and Mesa Community College. He primarily played center mid growing up but has played all the different positions over the years, including keeper. He has been the assistant coach for one year at Gilbert Junior High and two years at Gilbert High School for Varsity Girls. He has been a personal trainer and has officiated high school soccer for three years. After graduating in 2015 from ASU, he began his current job with DES/DDD. He continues to play the game in adult city leagues. Austin loves the game of soccer not only for the physical activity, but also for the life lessons that can be learned through the game.

RYAN NAYLOR

'12 BOYS RED HEAD COACH

Ryan has been coaching soccer for six years. He began coaching at recreational leagues, NYS, CCV, and GYS. For the past year, Ryan has been a volunteer coach with Arsenal’s AYDP program. Having three children under 10 years old, Ryan created his own soccer league in 2020 to help kids get out of the home and exercise to help their anxiety and tensions while school and sports programs were shut down.

JOSH MILLER

'07 BOYS RED HEAD COACH

Josh has been coaching for three years. He began and is still at Casteel High School. He has been leading the JV program through multiple undefeated programs and is helping lead the Casteel Varsity team to their first State Championship. Josh is also employed as a high school Mathematics teacher at Casteel High School. He is also the Algebra 1 level and helps build the Algebra 1 curriculum at Casteel High School. Josh has played at multiple levels up through High School and was a part of the first state championship that Hamilton won. He was also awarded with the Building A Legacy (B.A.L.) Scholarship through San Tan Legacy for his commitment and character to the club, sport, and team.

EDWIN MESONES

'08 BOYS HEAD COACH

Edwin has been coaching competitive club soccer for over 10 years in just Arizona alone. He has coached State League teams, competitive USL, and is constantly looking for ways to improve his coaching ability. He has been assistant coach to many of the bigger names in US Soccer including Todd Higley (US National Men’s team 1995); Karla Thompson (US Youth Soccer  Director); and Dominick Papa (USL Player and current Brophy Assistant).

He started his coaching career in California with Acalanes High School as the defensive coach and assistant coach. He then moved to Chico for college to play D2 and ended his career in  Phoenix playing Community College.

Received his US Soccer Licenses – Youth License, E License, State D License, National D  License. Currently pursuing his National C License later this year. 

Currently coaching the Division 4 U-11 Boys 9v9 and U19 High School boys’ soccer. Have held the 99 boys since U-12 and will see this group graduate for the first time in AZSC history. Edwin has played at a high level both in College, and with top High School team in Northern California. He looks forward to continuing his journey coaching and continuing his license education.

JAMES MACK

'06 GIRLS BLUE HEAD/'08 GIRLS BLUE HEAD COACH/'09 GIRLS BLUE HEAD COACH

Coach Mack grew up in Upstate NY playing multiple sports including soccer in High School. While in college, Coach Mack studied Management Science at the State University of New York at Cortland. Coach Mack and his family moved to Arizona in 1998 and currently reside in Gilbert, AZ. He has coached several successful teams at GYSA United, and led the 2007 girls from recreational play to an APL team, winning the Arizona/New Mexico League and reaching the State Cup semi-finals. His players have consistently graduated to Arizona’s regional teams, playing at the highest levels in the southwest region. James was awarded Arizona Soccer Association’s Girls Competitive Coach of the Year in 2019. He currently holds a National “D” license.

MIKE LUNDAHL

'08 BOYS BLUE HEAD COACH/'11 BOYS BLUE HEAD COACH

Mike has been coaching soccer for 10 years. He began coaching recreational soccer for AZ Soccer Club and moved to Barcelona, AZ, when the club was formed. He coached several ages with Barcelona’s recreational teams for 5 years, then moved to club. While continuing with recreational, Academy, and skills programs, he has coached the 03/04 girls for the last 5 years.  He went to Barcelona, Spain, in the spring of 2014 for training. He has attended both Module I and II coaching training sessions, and currently holds a National “E” license certificate for coaching and will be continuing his licensing as time permits.

CURTIS JACOBS

'09 BOYS BLUE ASSISTANT COACH

Curtis has been coaching soccer for nine years. He began coaching at Kingman High school in 1998 as a newly graduated player and has continued ever since. Curtis has enjoyed training teams at all levels, especially as his children have grown through the Phoenix Rising and AYSO Region 1079 recreational and All-Star programs. When not on the soccer pitch, Curtis works in accounting at GoDaddy, enjoys spending time with his wife and kids, and challenging himself running or cycling.

CASEY BAKER

ACADEMY DIRECTOR/TOURNAMENT DIRECTOR

Casey has been involved in soccer for over 35 years. He grew up in the valley playing locally and later while in the military. Eventually, Casey began to volunteer as a coach in recreation and competitive youth levels. During his travels, he coached and played in several countries, environments, and age groups. The goal was to always find the local game and embrace it. After the military, Casey has continued to coach recreational and competitive teams, eventually joining NSFC. He currently holds a National “F” license certificate for coaching.

JASON HAKES

'09 GIRLS BLUE ASSISTANT COACH

Jason has been coaching soccer since 1992. He has coached in the states of AZ and WA. He has coached a variety of levels including recreational, select, and high school soccer. He currently holds a USSF National D License and an NFHS Level 2 Certification. He is currently an assistant boys’ varsity coach at Benjamin Franklin HS and an assistant with the East Valley NSFC 09 girls.

JON THOMAS

'04 GIRLS BLUE HEAD COACH/'09 GIRLS RED HEAD COACH

Jon has been coaching soccer in Arizona for 14 years. He began coaching in Lexington, Kentucky, while in graduate school and has spent the last seven years coaching teams at MSC United. Jon currently coaches the Girls varsity team at Mountain View High as well as the Boys Varsity at Heritage Gateway Academy, taking both programs to the state playoffs last year. Jon lives in Mesa, AZ, with his family and works in operational finance. He currently holds a USSF National “D” license for coaching as well as other certifications.

MICHAEL GONZALEZ

Coach Mikey has been coaching futbol for over 20 years in the East Valley. He began coaching his nephew in a grassroots recreation league at the YMCA in 1999 and has continued coaching ever since. He has trained several teams and coached in Recreational, Academy, and Competitive programs through TFA Barcelona Arizona & NSFC. He currently holds a National USSF “D” license certificate for coaching and has taken multiple coaching courses in Barcelona Spain. Coach Mikey believes in the Total Futbol philosophy and spanish style of play. He is currently Head Coach at the American Leadership Academy Gilbert North High school’s Boys Varsity team. He has been married to his high school sweetheart for over 20 years and is a father of three.  He is grateful to his wife for supporting him throughout all these years coaching.

MANFRED KWARTENG

'06 BOYS KWARTENG HEAD COACH/'10 BOYS KWARTENG HEAD COACH/'07 BOYS GONZALEZ ASST COACH/'05 BOYS GONZALEZ ASST COACH

Manfred is a recent college graduate but has played soccer his entire life. He was born in Ghana, West Africa, and lived there for 12 years, moving to the United States in 2010. He attended Poston Junior High and Mountain View High School in Mesa for primary and secondary education and while there played 2 years of soccer for Poston Junior High and four years of soccer for Mountain View High School, one year for junior varsity and three years were for varsity. He also played one year for Coach Michael Gonzalez’s TFA Barca AZ ‘97 Boy’s and assisted in volunteer coaching for his ‘03 Boys.
